Apologies for the recent lull in posts. I have slowly been receiving bis and bobs of testing results from the niftymitter 0.24 testers and do intend to document them all here soon.
Have been up in Dundee these past two days, getting promo shots for the exhibition in June. Would be great to have some authentic [...]

Niftymitter v0.21 first prototype

So here is v0.21 so far, with the new PCB and circuit housed within. I cheated a bit in that there is no switch, so used the existing hole to mount the line in socket. The dimensions of the net are all a bit wonky, but I knew that before. Here’s how it looks otherwise:

Niftymitter 0.21 custom PCB
posted by admin on October 20th, 2009 under Niftymitter
I made up a custom PCB for the new niftymitter using Mike’s excellent laser engraving method. This involves spray painting copperplate, etching away the negative trace image, then ferric chloriding the thing to remove the exposed copper. You then clean off the paint using solvent and, hey presto, one PCB. It was a harmless process, [...]
Niftymitter layout tests

A series of tests to find different ways of packaging the components of the niftymitter, culminating in the above, housed within matchboxes! I used the parts from the v0.1 prototype for this study and was aiming for something copmact, slim and that sat better on a worktop – v0.1 and 0.2 having suffered from bulkiness [...]
Niftymitter v0.2 – shelved

Having realised that the niftymitters are what I shall initially be pursuing here in Dundee, the first thing I decided to do was to see how the v0.1 design could be translated into a cardboard construction for laser cutting. The results were not satisfying at all though, the thing still being an awkward form proportion [...]

OK, clearly I am in the process of populating this blog, and am thus playing a game of catch up! anyway, the biggest news is that I am tired of tinkering with the website, so am going to go with this incarnation, and a series of catch up posts follow..
Niftymitter general update

I am readying v.0.21 for release – this version is housed within a laser cut cardboard package, as suggested by Mike Shorter here at Dundee. I think this will be great as the previous version, for 3mm acrylic or ply was looking way too bulky and quite prone to failure at the joints. With the [...]
